Las Vegas Keeps Winning the Bid for the World's Biggest Conferences. Here's Why.

LAS VEGAS — CES pulled in 148,392 attendees this year. The SEMA Show topped 153,000. IMEX America packed more than 90,000 pre-scheduled business meetings into three days at Mandalay Bay. And Ai4, one of the country's fastest-growing AI conferences, just moved into The Venetian after outgrowing the MGM Grand.

The pattern isn't new, but it keeps repeating: major tech conferences default to Las Vegas, and increasingly, so do the industries chasing that same level of spectacle.

The Infrastructure Case

Las Vegas offers roughly 15 million square feet of meeting and exhibition space citywide, spread across more than 156,000 hotel rooms in 191 hotels. The Las Vegas Convention Center alone spans 4.6 million square feet. The Venetian's convention and expo center covers 2.25 million square feet, the largest exhibition venue in the city. Mandalay Bay adds another 2.1 million square feet tied to nearly 4,750 rooms. Caesars Forum houses the world's two largest pillarless ballrooms.

That density lets an organizer house the general session, the exhibit hall, thousands of hotel rooms, and every offsite event within a single walkable campus, a combination no other US convention market can match at this scale. A 20-minute airport transfer and roughly 292 days of sunshine a year don't hurt either.

Why Tech Leads the Pack

Tech conferences bring a level of spectacle that other industries generally don't: product reveals, robot demos, immersive brand activations, and production budgets that rival concert tours. Healthcare, finance, and government-focused conventions tend to run leaner. Las Vegas built its convention infrastructure to match tech's appetite for scale, which is a big part of why AI and tech events keep signing here.

It's Not Just About the Ballroom

The dining scene alone has become a competitive advantage. Guy Savoy anchors Caesars Palace. José Andrés's Bazaar Meat relocated in 2025 from the Sahara into a 20,000-square-foot space at The Venetian. Major Food Group's Carbone has run at Aria since 2013, and its 2025 sister property, Carbone Riviera, took over Bellagio's former Picasso space overlooking the fountains. The Michelin Guide's return to the Southwest, with Las Vegas selections expected this year, only formalizes what the industry already knew.

Entertainment closes the deal. Bruno Mars has extended his Dolby Live residency repeatedly through 2026. Sphere's calendar includes extended runs from Backstreet Boys and Kenny Chesney, plus limited engagements from Metallica, the Eagles, ILLENIUM, and Carín León. A conference that wraps at 5 p.m. can hand attendees a same-night ticket to a world-class show without a second hotel check-in.

The Offsite Circuit Keeps Expanding

AREA15, Allegiant Stadium, and Topgolf at MGM Grand have long anchored Las Vegas's offsite event scene. Newer additions are raising the ceiling further. Grand Prix Plaza, the 39-acre complex built around the Las Vegas Grand Prix's pit building, opened in 2025 as a year-round attraction with private event spaces like the Turn 1 Lounge, which holds up to 500 guests. F1 Arcade's flagship US location at The Forum Shops at Caesars spans more than 21,000 square feet with 87 racing simulators, built to host full buyouts for up to 600 guests. Play Playground at Luxor offers a similarly scaled game-floor buyout for corporate groups.

The Activations Only Vegas Can Support

Sphere has hosted full exterior takeovers from Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation, Warner Bros., and the NBA, plus a 2026 takeover from Supreme tied to a global product launch, each generating hundreds of millions of impressions. During CES, brands routinely move their biggest moments off the show floor entirely, staging full property takeovers at Aria, Fontainebleau, and The Venetian. Lenovo's CES 2026 Tech World event, staged inside Sphere itself alongside a headline Nvidia partnership reveal, is one recent example of a brand treating the venue as the announcement.

Private Sphere buyouts range from a 200-guest reception in the Theory Lounge to a full 3,000-person takeover of the Main Atrium. It's the kind of activation that simply doesn't exist as an option in most convention cities.

What's Next

The Athletics' new $2 billion, 33,000-seat domed stadium is under construction on the Strip at the former Tropicana site, on track for a 2028 opening. It will be the first permanent, climate-controlled dome on Las Vegas Boulevard, and given what happened after Allegiant Stadium opened in 2020 and Sphere in 2023, conference producers are already watching for how it gets absorbed into the events calendar.

The Proof Is in Who Comes Back

HumanX debuted in Las Vegas in 2025, then moved its second edition to San Francisco for 2026 to chase proximity to the Bay Area's AI ecosystem. Attendance nearly doubled. The conference is still returning to Las Vegas for 2027, this time at Mandalay Bay.

That's the pattern worth watching: organizers test other markets, then come back to the one built to handle everything a modern conference now requires, from the general session to the afterparty.
