IRL Meeting and Event Demand is back. Budgets are not.

Optimism is back in the meetings industry, but it comes with a catch. MPI's Meetings Outlook Q3 2026 shows planners feeling good about the road ahead: 60% project favorable business conditions, 56% expect favorable budgets and 61% expect live attendance to grow.

More people, steady money, strong demand. So where is the problem? It sits in the gap between what attendees expect and what budgets can absorb.

Premium on a Practical Budget

Planners are being asked to deliver elevated experiences while keeping costs in check, and that tension has become the defining planning challenge of the year. According to the report, 71% of respondents name the balance between premium experience and cost control as their hardest event-design challenge. At the same time, 73% say intentional event design is essential to business outcomes.

In other words, planners cannot simply cut their way to success. Strip out too much and the event stops doing its job.

A New Way to Measure Success

That tension is changing how events are judged. The total invoice matters less than the value delivered per attendee and per qualified meeting. A lower rate means little if the room, the flow or the service model undermines the result.

Cost pressure is now pushing decisions toward thoughtful design, flexible space and integrated properties that can support the full experience efficiently. The cheapest quote is no longer an automatic win.

What Venues and Destinations Should Do Now

For venues and destinations, the opportunity is clear: prove visible value instead of defaulting to discounts. Show planners how your space, service model, location and partner ecosystem help them generate more impact from every line of the budget. Bring case studies, attendee data and flexible packages to the table, not just a lower number.

The Bottom Line

The next phase of MICE will belong to the partners who make premium feel purposeful. Those who connect spend to outcomes will win the business. Those who compete on price alone will keep negotiating against a shrinking margin.
